Why Not Home?

I have been teaching OB clinical skills to practical nursing students for the past few months. Although these are not people entrenched in the medical system yet, it is very revealing to watch their reactions when they learn that I am a home birth midwife. Many have their own birth experiences, some are new to the US, some don’t yet have children–but┬ámost have never even considered having their babies at home on purpose.

Tonight I showed the new film, Why Not Home? to the students. It is a documentary of maternity care professions who choose to birth at home. It is beautifully done and a very well-balanced presentation of the issues surrounding home birth. If you have a chance to watch it, do.

I am not sure how long I will continue to teach this section of their course, but I feel like I am opening some eyes along the way.
